M.S. and Ph.D. Degrees

Graduate studies in plant breeding are administered through the Applied Plant Sciences program at the University of Minnesota. A hallmark of our graduate program is our diversity of plant species and disciplines:

  • We study not just corn and soybean and wheat, but also alfalfa, apple, Arabidopsis, barley, bean, blueberry, chrysanthemum, cover crops, forages, grape, oat, potato, rose, tomato, turfgrasses, vegetables, and woody ornamentals. These species include annuals and perennials, diploids and polyploids, and self-pollinated, cross-pollinated, and asexually propagated plants.
  • Disciplines of our plant breeding and genetics faculty include genomics, gene editing, transcriptomics, epigenetics, cytogenetics, marker-assisted breeding, genomewide prediction, statistical genetics, computational biology, phenomics, and (of course) cultivar development.

The Plant Breeding Center provides placement of M.S. and Ph.D. students in internships or coop opportunities in breeding companies or international research centers. Please contact us ([email protected]) if you have an internship or coop opportunity that you would like to fill.
